About
Nancy Blum

I received both Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Music Education degrees from the arts conservatory of the Hartt School of Music in West Hartford, Ct. For my Bachelor of Music degree, I majored in clarinet performance, in which I studied with Kan Lagace and Kalmen Opperman. I minored in piano performance, in which I studied with Paul Rutman. During my time at Hartt, I was principal clarinetist and was highly praised by Mstislav Rostropovich. I was entered into the "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities." After moving to Northern Virginia, I commuted weekly to Philadelphia to study with Donald Montanaro of the Philadelphia Orchestra. I then went to the University of Maryland for my Masters degree in clarinet performance where I studied with Norman Heim. I opened a private piano and clarinet studio in 1971. In the 1980s, I pursued my long-time desire to study the bassoon. I studied with Arnold Irchai, Linda Harwell and Truman Harris of the National Symphony, Dean Woods of the US Army Band and Bryan Yound of the Poulenc Trio.
I maintain a private studio of 30 clarinet, bassoon, piano and music theory students in Herndon. For the past 16 years, I have worked weekly as a bassoon and clarinet clinician at Fairfax County middle and high schools. I am a registered instructor of the Suzuki piano method. I have a particular interest in preparing students for performance and music theory exams for the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music (ABRSM). These exams are a standard in Europe and Asia and participation in them provides a strong addition to a college application.
I also teach Advanced Placement (AP) music theory. In addition to my teaching, I am widely known as a piano accompanist to all instruments.
I am currently studying piano with Minji Lee of Shenandoah Conservatory.
